Only now, the factions have been shuffled around as we get to witness what became of them after the events of the first game.Īnother thing worth mentioning is that Elex 2 is much more of a niche RPG in that it’s much more focused on players tailoring Jax around specific builds. In the previous game, the various factions came with their own territories and that seems to have remained the same for the sequel. Magalan is a lush world, covered in the ruins of an ancient civilization that feels much like our own. The Jetpack is both useful and obnoxious at the same timeĮlex 2 is set in a world where science fiction and fantasy have been blended together to create a unique, post-apocalyptic world. So, what I’m going to do is break this review up into the positives and then follow it with all the negatives. It just feels like there’s a bit to unpack and it’s not going to be very positive. Unfortunately, Elex 2 doesn’t really excel at anything at all, and to be upfront with you, dear reader, reviewing this game was a struggle. Usually, I prefer to talk about aspects of a game and let that flow into what I liked and disliked. I’m going to do this review a little differently than I normally would. Adam promises to help Jax but only if he helps defend Magalan by fortifying the Basion to fight against the Skyands. He’s saved by a man named Adam and discovers lost all of his belongings and is infected by a mysterious disease. They strike at Jax who narrowly escapes with his life. ![]() Eventually, as Jax’s heroic deeds faded into obscurity, the Skyands appeared in the sky. After ignoring his warning of a potential threat in the future, Jax chose to separate himself from the world. Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox SeriesĪfter defeating the Albs, humanity began to settle back into their old habits. ![]() Is Elex 2 worth picking up though? Let’s just skip the games and be honest with each other. Enjoy. The planet of Magalan is under threat once again and it’s up to Jax to answer the call and fight against the Skyands. Here's a video I made with some of the game's opening moments. Warning: There's a lot of dialogue, at least early on. Maybe if you just mute every dialogue scene. The Ugly: The voice-acting and writing is abysmal. The Bad: No character customization means you're stuck with a protagonist that I for one can't stand to look at or listen to. I can see how combat later on could be pretty fun, once you have gear beyond a stick and a rusty ax. In fact, they're kind of pretty when they're not buggy. The competition, in other words, is stiff. There's just too many other really good games (like Cuphead, the new South Park RPG, and Shadow of War) that I'm playing right now, not to mention I really need to keep playing Divinity Original Sin 2, which is just utterly fantastic so far. I'll try to play more and find out, but it's not going to be easy. On Steam, plenty of gamers are giving the game good reviews, so I imagine the gameplay later on makes up for game's many flaws, at least to some degree. Frankly, I think games like this should just drastically scale back the amount of dialogue and then spend a little more on hiring good writers and voice actors. If you want a game that's so laughably bad that it's actually entertaining, this might be for you. The voice-acting so far is terrible all around, but the main protagonist's voice work is truly awful. It's a puzzling missed opportunity in games like ELEX, especially given how bland the protagonist is. ![]() ![]() This makes us more invested in our own experience of the game. The only time I'm really okay not creating my own character in a game is if that character is really amazing, like Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher games.Įven in a game like Mass Effect, while you have to play Commander Shepard, at least you can choose male or female and customize your character's appearance. Games like this one and Lords of the Fallen and The Surge all force you to play a pre-made character, and that would be fine if any of them were appealing to play. I really wish these mid-tier action-RPGs would let you build your character from scratch. It's an RPG where you can't customize your character in any way, so you're stuck with a guy who looks kind of weird and sounds even worse. But here's the thing.Įlex doesn't inspire confidence. So take it with the allotted grains of salt that entails.
